THE TRUTH BURNS

my mouth is on fire
not from the words
i have spoken

but from the ones
that never made it out

generations
of swallowed grief
buried rage
unshed tears

coals
passed from
hand to hand

from mother
to daughter
from father
to son

the women
called mad
for telling the truth

the men
praised
for carrying it alone

both inheriting
the same silence

my tongue
a strand of barbed wire
my throat
a furnace

and still
the truth rises
not asking permission
not seeking approval

only passage
through the stories
through the roles
through the ancient loyalties
that kept suffering alive

until someone
stands in the doorway

and says

no further
let it end
with me

perhaps that is what
a cycle breaker is

the one willing
to lose belonging
rather than
lose the truth

the one willing
to become the outcast

so the children
do not inherit the cage

my mouth is on fire
because a 1000
silenced voices
have finally found
one open door
